Where does vaginal moisture come from and why is it important?

The primary source of moisture in the vagina comes from secretion from the blood vessels that are in the vaginal tissue.

Vaginal moisture occurs naturally in a healthy vagina. If the vagina becomes dry it is more likely to get infections and pain during intercourse. Bacterial vaginosis can also then occur due to the increase in pH.

What is vaginal dryness?

Vaginal dryness can occur when the oestrogen levels in the vagina drop which in turn reduces the amount of moisture in the vagina making the walls thinner and less elastic.  This drop in oestrogen levels can occur at any time or may well be due to the menopause, following giving birth, illness and medication.

In fact as many as 1 in 3 women will experience vaginal dryness whilst going through the menopause.

Causes of vaginal dryness

Some causes include:
  • Menopause
  • Low levels of oestrogen
  • Post-partum
  • Breast feeding
  • Treatments or medications
  • Diabetes
  • Radiotherapy or chemotherapy
  • Post hysterectomies
  • Sjögren’s syndrome
  • Allergy, cold medications and certain antidepressants
  • Douching

Symptoms of vaginal dryness

  • Vaginal irritation and generally feeling uncomfortable when sitting, walking or wearing tight clothes
  • Pain or discomfort during intercourse
  • More frequent urinary tract infections
  • A change in discharge
  • Urinary incontinence
  • Shortening and tightening of the vaginal canal

Prevention

Firstly it is important to figure out what is causing vaginal dryness and sometimes prevention for vaginal dryness is out of your control. If you have symptoms of vaginal dryness, you might wish to describe your problem with your GP.

Dryness and infections can be aggravated by soaps, perfumes and other strong or fragranced products such as bath oils and shower gels. Disinfectants and antiseptics could also cause discomfort so it is best to avoid using anything other than lukewarm water or a soap free intimate wash.
