Your period, the low down

A period is a natural part of the menstrual cycle when a woman will bleed from her vagina for a few days.

The menstrual cycle occurs due to the rise and fall of hormones when the female body is preparing for pregnancy. Every month an egg develops and is released by the ovary (known as ovulation). During this process, the womb lining thickens to prepare for a fertilised egg. If the egg is not fertilised the lining is released. The lining will come away and leave the vagina mixed with blood. This is your period.

The first period is known as menarche and can start between the ages of 12 – 15 years old. After that, a woman’s period will continue until the menopause, which usually occurs when a woman is in her late 40s to mid-50s.

Most menstrual periods last from 3 to 5 days. If you are unsure about anything to do with your period we’d recommend speaking to your GP.

Symptoms

During her period a woman will bleed for a couple of days.

The amount of blood lost varies from person to person but usually it is about 30 to 72ml (it looks like more but that is actually just 5 to 12 teaspoons!).

Some women suffer from Premenstrual Syndrome (PMS).

PMS is the physical, psychological and emotional symptoms that can occur during the period. Some of the symptoms are:

  • Breast tenderness
  • Problems sleeping (insomnia)

  • Mood swings
  • Feeling upset or emotional
  • Feeling irritable or angry
  • Depressed mood
  • Crying and tearfulness
  • Anxiety
  • Difficulty concentrating
  • Confusion and forgetfulness
  • Restlessness

What are your options?

During your period you have the option of a variety of sanitary products. These include tampons, sanitary pads and menstrual cups. If your period is very heavy you can talk to your healthcare professional. There are a number of medications that can help.
